ecos laundry detergent

It’s an open secret nowadays that laundry detergent, or any other soap product for that matter, is packed with all types of chemicals, especially toxic chemicals. Not a day seems to go by without news papers carrying an article regarding the indiscriminate use of chemicals in our society, and its harmful side effects.

The fact is that, there are ways most of us can contribute against this negative trend. There may not be one single solution, but many small things put together can make a difference. If each person changed their life style a little, it would go a long way in helping with environmental cause. One such area is the use of detergents.

The household goods market today is filled with many alternatives to regular or non-eco detergent goods. What makes eco laundry different from conventional laundry products is that it will not contain harmful chemicals and toxins. During the manufacturing process harmful products will be replaced using natural and environmentally friendly products.

Interestingly, eco laundry detergent will be cheaper, depending on the brand. They are available both in powder as well as liquid form. When using these products you will not need large amounts. Therefore the benefits are twofold, lower cost as well less usage.

So how is eco laundry detergent made and what makes them so special. There are many ingredients used to make this type of detergent product, and we will examine some of the more commonly used natural products. Soap nut is one such product. Soap nut is fruit which grows on a plant named the ritha plant. Soap nut is the dried fruit of this tree and it is rich in saponins.

When soap nut comes in contact with water the saponins get released. This is what gives the water a foamy texture. This lather or foam is a strong surfactant, which basically means it is good at breaking up the surface tension on clothes. This in turn releases the dirt and other impurities from the clothes. However, the best part is that soap nut is toxin free and non-poisonous.

There are other products which can be used to make eco friendly detergent products. These include but not limited to, baking soda, washing soda, and borax. These are all mixed together in equal amounts. Adding some natural soap or vegetable oil will give it more foam. A few drops of essential oils, such as pine oil, will help with aroma.

The point of all this is that it is possible to make eco laundry detergent at home, if necessary.
